Individual Music Therapy | 個別音樂治療

One-to-one music therapy with registered music therapist Justin Tso. Most plans start with an assessment; individual sessions for children and adults follow a plan built from it.

## Music Therapy Assessment (Individual) (60 min)

Start here. A one-to-one hour to understand needs, strengths and the right next step.

Every music therapy plan begins with an assessment. In this 60-minute one-to-one session, registered music therapist Justin Tso talks with you about background and needs, then observes communication, interaction, attention and emotional responses through music activities. Afterwards he explains suggested goals and whether individual sessions or a small group may suit best.

For families of children with special educational needs, and for adults who would like an individual consultation first.

A printed written report is available for an additional HK$200 (prepared by the therapist; please allow time for preparation).

1. What it is: music therapy is a professional, evidence-based allied health service led by a registered music therapist, who uses music with purpose to work towards each person's own goals.
2. How it works: a cycle of assessment → individual plan → intervention → re-evaluation → follow-up, with families and caregivers kept informed.
3. Music experiences include improvisation, singing, songwriting, music listening and music imagery. No music background needed.
4. Not a music lesson: the focus is communication, emotion, social interaction and wellbeing — not musical performance.

Depending on the person and the listing, goals may include:
1. Communication and social interaction, such as taking turns, imitation and eye contact.
2. Understanding and expressing emotions; relaxation and stress relief.
3. Listening, waiting and self-regulation through structured, predictable music.
4. Confidence and connection — for children, adults and caregivers.
Goals, not guarantees: individual results vary.

1. Definitions follow professional bodies: the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA), the American Music Therapy Association and the World Federation of Music Therapy.
2. Four common method groups: improvisation, re-creative (singing familiar songs), composition (songwriting) and receptive (listening, music imagery).
3. Evidence differs by area. Cochrane reviews suggest music therapy probably helps global improvement and quality of life in autism (2022) and, alongside usual care, may reduce depressive symptoms in the short term (2017). For social skills, language, attention and ADHD the evidence is limited or unclear, so these are written as goals, not proven effects.
4. Music therapy does not diagnose, and does not replace medical, speech, occupational or psychological care.

1. Children with special educational needs, such as autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay or intellectual disability, and children and teens with emotional and social learning needs.
2. Adults experiencing emotional distress or stress, and adults with special needs.
3. Parents, caregivers and teachers who want to understand or experience music therapy.
4. Not for: anyone seeking a cure, a diagnosis or a replacement for medical care, or anyone in crisis — please contact a doctor or emergency services first. Age, format and parent arrangements differ by listing; see the course details.

FAQ | Frequently Asked Questions

Music therapy is a professional, evidence-based allied health service led by a registered music therapist. After an assessment, the therapist uses music experiences such as improvising, singing, songwriting, listening and music imagery to work towards each person's own goals in communication, emotion, social interaction and wellbeing.

A music lesson teaches an instrument or music theory. Music therapy is led by a registered music therapist and follows a cycle of assessment, planning, intervention and re-evaluation. The focus is the person's goals, not musical performance.

No. Sessions do not teach an instrument. The focus is interacting and expressing through music, so no musical experience is needed.

Justin Tso (曹耀丰), Registered Music Therapist with the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and the Hong Kong Music Therapy Association (HKMTA). Hong Kong has no statutory registration for music therapists; recognised overseas registration plus HKMTA membership is the usual benchmark.

The therapist first talks with you about background and needs, then observes interaction, communication, attention and emotional responses through music activities. Goals and a plan are then set and explained to the family or caregiver.

Group classes run in terms: one term is 8 sessions, one session a week, extendable to 8 sessions by mutual agreement. For individual sessions, the therapist recommends a plan after assessment, and progress is reviewed along the way. We do not promise results within a set number of sessions.

Music therapy is generally gentle and safe. It does not diagnose or treat medical conditions and is not a substitute for medical care, medication, speech therapy or occupational therapy. Please tell the therapist about any health, hearing or sensory needs before the session.

Comfortable clothes and a water bottle. No instrument or music experience is needed. If your child is sensitive to loud sounds, please let us know in advance.

Five listings in the Music Therapy collection: Music Therapy Seminar (free); Caregiver Workshop; Music Therapy Groups (Parent-Child Social Connection, Social Expression, Attention & Regulation – Children's Group and Parent-Child Group); Individual Music Therapy (assessment, child and adult one-to-one); and SEN Ability Groups (age 5–9, assessment required).

The therapist explains suggested goals and whether individual sessions or a group may suit. A written report is not included in the HK$1,500 assessment fee. A printed written report is available for an additional HK$200 (prepared by the therapist; please allow time for preparation).

Every individual plan is built from an assessment. Whether Music Therapy Assessment (Individual) must be booked separately first

No. Music therapy is a separate allied health service. It can sit alongside medical or psychological care but does not replace it. If you are in crisis, contact a doctor or emergency services.

Yes, for individual sessions. Child 1:1 (45 min): HK$1,200 per session or HK$8,640 for an 8-session package (regular HK$9,600).
